STARTING AN ADEPTUS CUSTODES ARMY IN 11TH EDITION: TEN THOUSAND YEARS, TWENTY MODELS

If you want a full army you can actually finish, the Adeptus Custodes deliver: a handful of golden demigods, refreshed for 11th edition and utterly glorious. The Emperor's own bodyguard fight in small, perfect numbers — a complete Custodes force is often twenty or thirty models where other armies need a hundred — which makes them the single kindest faction to a new hobbyist's time, budget and sanity. Every model is a centrepiece in miniature, every one deserves your best gold recipe, and none of them will ever sit in a shame pile two hundred deep.

The first box: a bodyguard, not a horde

Start with the current Combat Patrol-style set — starter boxes rotate with each edition, so buy whatever is current. The units you want first are the ones that define the faction: Custodian Guard with their guardian spears, the iconic image of the Ten Thousand, and a Shield-Captain to lead them. That is genuinely most of an army already. Spend the money you saved on models on a good metallic gold paint and a wash you trust — with the Custodes, your paint recipe is the army list.

The second oath

With one squad gleaming, broaden the honour guard. Custodian Wardens add a second flavour of elite infantry; Allarus Custodians bring Terminator-armoured weight and teleporting menace. For speed, Vertus Praetors on their Dawneagle jetbikes change the army's silhouette completely, and a Shield-Captain on jetbike is one of the best character models in gold. If you want contrast on the shelf, a squad of Sisters of Silence — the Custodes' black-armoured counterparts — breaks up the gold beautifully. A note on the new edition, in the only terms worth trusting: points and datasheets were refreshed for 11th edition, so check current points before building a list, and treat any older numbers as history.

The Captain-General

Custodes centrepieces are characters rather than tanks, and the summit is Trajann Valoris, Captain-General of the Ten Thousand — a magnificent, authority-radiating model that rewards every hour you give it. A Blade Champion is a superb second character, all motion and murder. Because the army is small, one exceptional character genuinely anchors the whole force; paint Trajann like he is the last model you will ever paint, because with this army you have the time to.

The Watchtower's ledger

The Ten Thousand record every duty in their towers, every oath kept and every post stood, and a collection this small deserves the same precision. Log each kit when it arrives and mark it truthfully — boxed, built, or finished — because with only a couple of dozen models, every single one you finish visibly transforms the army. There is no faction where the finished column fills faster, and no better cure for hobby fatigue than watching it happen. For the complete roll of everything the Custodes can field, from Guard to Captain-General, see the Adeptus Custodes faction page under Data.
